Paul Covell Consultants was formed in 1990 to provide specialist architectural lighting design services, particularly for churches and other places of worship, as well as theatre consultancy services for smaller entertainment venues. Our theatre work includes spatial planning, staging/seating/sightline studies, and technical systems specification and integration, and so is highly applicable to places of worship.
Whether you are planning to upgrade an existing place of worship or theatre, or considering a new build, we can provide the specialist advice and design services your project merits.
As a small independent design consultancy we can
discuss your requirements and provide initial outline advice
produce concept designs, collaborating with any other design team members
select the most appropriate and cost-effective equipment based on aesthetics, energy efficiency and capital costs
further develop designs, producing detailed planning and tender drawings and specifications
assist in obtaining approvals from the relevant statutory bodies
monitor projects during construction, installation, commissioning and handover
offer competitive fees which represent excellent value for money
Before forming his own practice, Paul worked in professional theatre as a technician and lighting designer, followed by several years as a theatre and lighting consultant with other established practices. As well as working on numerous theatre projects throughout the UK, he lit many churches in the South of England while living in Dorset, and was also lighting and sound adviser to Salisbury Diocesan Advisory Committee for 17 years.
Paul is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts , a Member of the Society of Light and Lighting and the Institute of Theatre Consultants, and a friend of the Theatres Trust. He is also a church organist, a member of the Guild of Church Musicians and a friend of the Royal School of Church Music.
The practice, now based in Perthshire, specialises in architectural lighting projects, particularly for places of worship, in addition to providing theatre consultancy services and church re-ordering planning. Current projects include several in Scotland plus some in England and one in Wales.
We pride ourselves in working sympathetically with clients, other design team members if involved, and contractors, particularly those who have little or no experience of specialist practices like ours.
Our schemes are presented in a visually clear and concise manner, using AutoCAD and DIALux among other apps.
We have no commercial links with manufacturers, distributors or contractors. This enables us to provide a truly independent and impartial planning service, devising the most appropriate and cost-effective solutions for each project. Fee proposals include a suggested scope of works tailored to the needs of the project.
